Sunday XI finish pre-season with a win

The last pre season friendly for the Sunday XI got off to a good start with skipper Jacobs winning the toss and deciding to bat. He will definitely be keeping hold of the coin to help in future games.

Maynard and McDermid were sent in to open. Unfortunately McDermid was out for 3 with the Sunday XI on 28. In stepped Waheed who has been showing great promise. A great partnership between Maynard and Waheed with some great running between the wickets mixed in with great shots moved the score on 109 when Maynard departed on 40 from 53. Callan joined Waheed in the middle who got off the mark with a boundary 4 but was dismissed with his second ball. Not a worry though with the score on 113 for 3 as Ashiq and Waheed put together a great partnership. Waheed got to 53 from 48 and was called in by the skipper. Agreed that it would be 50 and retire.

In came the skipper who made the decision that it would go hard or go home. A very swift 55 off 25 balls saw the skipper retire calling in Gauntlett to bat. Jacobs gave plenty of chances while still in single figures and made the fielders pay. Gauntlett came in and also didn’t waste time getting runs on the board. Ashiq departed not too long after for 24 but as always played some great shots with a few nice sweeps. Palmer in next who also got a nice partnership going with Gauntlett. Gauntlett departed for 44 from 43 which was his joint top score for the club. The innings finished with Palmer on 26* from 31 and Osborne on 4* off 4. Great batting performance with the score on 293 off 40 overs.

Over to the bowling for the Sunday XI with Spicer and Bisgrove opening. Spicer got the breakthrough in his first over with the score on 9 and his second wicket on his 3rd over. The first with Waheed diving forward at square leg with a great catch and the second with a high one taken by Osborne. In between those two there was one smashed at Jacobs at mid wicket who put it down. Bisgrove took his wicket in his last over that he could bowl in his first spell. Palmer replaced Bisgrove and Osborne replaced Spicer. Palmer going for 19 off his first 4 overs and Osborne 12 off his first 5 overs.

Callan had a couple overs getting a wicket with his first ball (only one that he bowled straight) and finished up with 2 overs, 1 wicket for 6 runs. Spicer came on to finish his last 3 overs and got another wicket finishing with 8 overs, 3 wickets for 35 runs. Waheed came on for some overs but unfortunately couldn’t get one however during his spell there were a couple run outs courtesy of Osborne backing up on one with the other picking up and turning to throw into Maynard. Waheed finished on 1.3 overs, 0 wickets for 10. Some great leg spin however.

The rest of the bowlers finished as follows:

  • Bisgrove 8 overs, 1 wicket for 59 runs
  • Palmer 8 overs, 1 wicket for 41 runs
  • Osborne 8 overs 1 wicket for 17 runs

Great performance by everyone with Road runners being all out for 174 and the bray winning by 119 runs.

Player of the match as voted by the players - Hamd Waheed 53* off 48 balls and some excellent fielding

Honourable Mentions:
Jaco Jacobs 55* off 25 balls
Aaron Gauntlett 44 off 43 joint top score for the club
Phil Spicer 8 overs 3 wickets for 35 runs
